Stevie Ray Vaughn
Stevie Ray Vaughan (born Stephen Ray Vaughan; October 3, 1954 – August 27, 1990) was an American guitarist, singer and songwriter, whose broad appeal made him an influential electric blues guitarist. The Real Deal: Greatest Hits, Vol. 1ReviewsThis is a really great cd for the person who isn't too familiar with SRV it has a nice mixture of all of his work! I like to listen to it when I am traveling so I don't have to switch albums in the car. It's a great compilation! This CD really rocks! Stevie sings his all time best hits and I would highly recommend this CD to anyone who has doubts about how great SRV really was. He rocks! Much, much better than 1995's original tepid "Greatest Hits"-album, this is a terrific introduction to the late, great Stevie Ray Vaughan. A supremely strong and unusually varied collection of songs, "The Real Deal: Greatest Hits vol. 1" brings together 16 of Stevie Ray's best tunes, smouldering slow blues, melodic, swaggering R&B, and gritty blues-rock, all of it suprebly played and arranged by one of the few latter-day blues guitarists who was NOT overly hyped! Most of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble's best songs are here, including "Pride & Joy", "Cold Shot", the sizzling high-octane blues "Texas Flood", and the rollicking "The House is Rocking", and those that aren't here are on the equally excellent volume two. Powerful, fiery covers of Guitar Slim's "The Things That I Used To Do" and Elmore James' "The Sky Is Crying" only adds to the appeal of this fine, well-packaged compilation. By itself, "The Real Deal vol 1" can't match the double-disc "Essential Stevie Ray Vaughan", but get this one, and volume two as well, and you'll have the second-best Stevie Ray Vaughan-collection on the market. The best one is the "SRV" box set...! The title says it all. Great songs from a great artist. Good quality recordings used. This new compilation, when purchased together with "The Real Deal, Vol.2", provides newcomers to SRV a nice overview of his all too brief career. There was a "Greatest Hits" album released in 1995 which is way inferior to this release. Personally, I'm not a fan of greatest hits or best of compilations, and usually will only purchase them if I don't know much about the artist and want to get a sample of their music. So, if you aren't familiar with Stevie or are on a budget, by all means get this CD as every song on it is essential. But after hearing this, you will want to go out and get everything he ever recorded. I have all of his discs and couldn't imagine being without any of them. To me, SRV was the greatest guitar player to have ever graced us with his presence. Average Rating:![]() |

Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble - Live at the El Mocambo 1983ReviewsStevie Ray live what more needs to be said. It is so said to know that we will never get to hear this genius again. There have been lots of great guitar players throughout the years but only one Stevie Ray Vaughn. This disc contains some of his best known songs and it is great to watch anytime. This is perhaps one of the best recorded video concerts of all time (imho). We Canadians certainly know how to video tape a live concert. Read all of the reviews if you must, they all equal the same result. Now all we can hope for is the ultimate, SRV on Blue Ray. Can you imagine? I recently saw Albert Cummings in Toronto at the Silver Dollar Club,(another premier blues club, and great performance) just a block up from the Elmacombo. I went for a walk down the street and got chills just thinking that SRV shook the street from just up the stairs from where I stood. Every other concert performed by who knows who has been released on Blue Ray. What's the hold up????????? Oh man, to have been there! This is Stevie at his best. I think I've watched this at least 15 times and it just gives me chills. Stevie's rendition of Hendrix's Third Stone is almost a better Hendirx than Hendrix. I know that's almost heresy but . . . wow! This number smokes! I'm buying a back-up copy of this DVD just in case I wear mine out! This is my first SRV video, and it is incredible! That guy could really play... a sad loss and a must have for any blues guitar lover. SRV really rips it up and the sound is top notch. If you've never saw SRV live, this is the closest thing to understanding why his fame grew. While raw, the sound is good and being able to watch him smoke the frets is amazing. SRV was at the top of his game at what he did...ENTERTAIN!!!!!!!!! Much better than the Austin City limits dvd in the box set. Average Rating:![]() |

Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble - Live From Austin, TexasReviewsThis is one of the best dvd's you can get with SRV! It shows both ends of his career. This is a MUST HAVE for any Stevie Ray fan or guitar enthusiast. His playing just captures your attention, you can't stop watching. Every track is just mind blowing, I have never seen anyone that plays that smooth or anyone that runs up and down the fretboard with that much feeling & soul. When Stevie plays you feel it so buy this dvd and you'll see for yourself. If you are a big SRV fan you'll be happy to have this. Is it top quality? Does it include as many songs/performances as I'd like? No and No. However, I am thrilled to have this. Even before he got clean, SRV just knew how to perform each and every time because the music came from deep within him. I am so glad he sobered up and was able to help others. He is an inspiration as a musician and a insightful human being. Glad he lives on despite leaving us in physical form. SRV, a true guitar genius. He left us way too soon and this DVD proves it. You can see the unbelievable transformation from the first concert in 1983 to his last appearance in 1989. No telling where he would have taken that strat if he'd lived on. Audio quality is fair. Video quality is good. If you love SRV and the blues, you'll love this.. Excellent audio for a video format. Every SRV fan should see this....too bad that HDTV didn't exist when this was filmed. Pride and Joy [VHS]ReviewsHere are eight videos from songs Stevie Ray Vaughan and his group did earlier in the 1980s. It's always a pleasure to hear SRV play his guitar so every song has something to offer. Most of them in this small collection are fast numbers and fun to hear. They are also short numbers so the whole video is only a little over a half-hour in length. In addition, some of the videos are very humorous, particularly the first couple. There are some scenes you laugh out loud. So....if you want 36 minutes of up-tempo rock-blues with some fun videos, this a great tape. I see now that this is available now on DVD with bonus songs. Wow, I'll have to order it! (Better late than never.) With all of the raves from you folks who own this on VHS, I checked under DVDs for Stevie Ray Vaughan on Amazon and found that it is coming out on DVD as of September 4, 2007. Thus, I preordered it. I am obsessed (my wife's words with which I pretty much agree) with SRV. I own all of his DVDs and his commercially available CDs, along with some bootleg CDs. This will complete my DVD collection on SRV....for now, anyway. Here is how to find this one on Amazon: Pride and Joy this is a good srv vhs. i own it. its one of my favorites' but ya know with mr vaughan you can never go wrong is the king. him and jimi hendrix both rule. some compare him to hendrix but i never do cause there both great artists in all they did. i love the videos on here i guess my favorite is cold shot and then commit a crime. love em all though. but one thought i have keeps comeing back to me seeing as to the name of this vhs is pride and joy shouldnt that one have been on here to? just a thought This is the best VHS out their with a collection of music videos featuring Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble also Live Performences. I would rate this a 5 because this could not get any better the music videos are really cool this is a must have for an SRV fan. My favorite is Couldnt Stand The Weather when SRV is playing his custom hamilton guitar in a rain storm very cool! I also like the western side of Change It. This is such a cool movie I hope they can release this sometime on DVD it would be sweeter so enjoy! This video compilation is great. It was a long time coming. SRV has been gone for, what, almost 12 years now? All the videos are here, Cold Shot, Superstition, Tightrope, Crossfire, and even a live one in New Orleans on a riverboat at the jazz festival. I only wish they would wake up and put this on DVD format. Doesn't it deserve to be? Average Rating:![]() |

Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble - Live at Montreux 1982 & 1985ReviewsThis dvd is amazing and my favorite! It has two live performances one in '82 or '83 where SRV and double trouble actually gets boo-ed off the stage. Which is actually my favorite disc of the two because he plays songs that aren't talked about too much. The second dvd was in '85 when SRV and double trouble were actually signed onto a label this time which helped them in not getting boo-ed off of the stage that time around. Great for a die hard SRV fan to put in their collection! We ordered Stevie Ray Vaughn and received two CD/s with NOTHING ON THEM! Very BAD. I really wanted this music!! I read somewhere once that if you really want a composite of what Stevie Ray Vaughan was all about, musically, all you need is this DVD. I totally agree. I have a half dozen SRV discs or tapes but nothing tops this. You get two concerts, one on each disc. The first is the "controversial" 1982 concert at Montreux (in Switzerland) and the other is the 1985 return trip to Montreux. The first was "controverial" in the reception Vaughan and his band received during and immediately after the performing: booing! It is shocking to hear. I've never heard an artist booed on a disc put out for public release, but it's in here. (There were a lot of cheers, too.) Of course, the booing and catcalls were totally unwarranted. The band was excellent and Stevie was tremendous, but the crowd was expecting what they had heard all day: quiet, acoustic blues guitar. When SRV turned up the amps and did his thing, some of them didn't like it. Nonetheless, I liked it and chances are you will, too, if you are a fan of his, or simply blues/rock. What I liked best were a couple of his long, slow numbers, such as "Dirty Pool." On that disc is a documentary, with band members Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon, discussing that '82 concert and what happened afterward. Jackson Browne also gives his take on his participation in helping out SRV and the band. It's pretty interesting. By 1985, the crowd knew all about SRV and gave him a great reception and he put on the best show, perhaps, I have ever seen him (and the band) do - just electrifying. In fact, there are four straight numbers - Tiny Pan Alley (a.k.a. Roughest Place In Town, Look At Little Sister, Voodoo Chile and Texas Flood - that are done so well that I had tears in my eyes. That is THE best version Vaughan has ever done on the Jimi Hendrix number (Voodoo Chile) and you have to just see and hear this to believe it. SRV pulls out all the stops, doing things with a guitar I've never seen before. Folks, it's true: this is the Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble DVD to get, above all others. This is a true "classic" double dvd,(two disc), with two concerts of Stevie Ray, and Double Trouble performing at the Montreux Jazz Fesival. It is a masterpiece of "blues-rock" guitar work by Stevie Ray. It also contains bonus material of a documentary interviews with Chris Layton, Tommy Shannon, Jackson Browne and John Mayer. Concert one July 17, 1982, the line-up is Stevie Ray on electric guitar and vocals, Tommy Shannon on bass and Chris Layton on the drums. (This was before they added a keyboard player). The set list consists of 8 songs, includeing the classis: "Pride and Joy", "Texas Flood", and "Love Struck Baby". The performances are outstanding, but they get "booed" off stage. However, David Bowie was in the audience and he was impressed with Stevie's guitar Skills, so he got him to play on Bowie's "Let's Dance" album of 1982. Concert two - July 15, 1985 and the line up consists of Stevie Ray on guitar and vocals, Tommy Shannon on bass, Chris Layton on drums, and Reese Wynans on keyboards. There are also guest appearances with Johnny Copeland, also from Texas. The set list consists of 13 songs. The concert is outstanding, and the fans love it this time. Some "classic's " performed include: "Pride and Joy", "Mary had a Little Lamb", "Cold Shot" (with Johnny Copeland), "Tin Pan Alley" (with Johnny Copeland), "Look at Little Sister" (with Johnny Copeland), "Voodoo Child" and they are called out for an encore which includes "Couldn't Stand the Weather". Concert two above shows Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble at their very best. This is a true classic 5 star concert. Stevie Ray was a guitar master, and this concert dvd shows it. If you like great "blues-rock" guitar music, then I highly recommend this one, you won't be disappointed. Great dvd set. Two excellent shows. A must for any Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble fan. If you have even a passing interest in Stevie Ray Vaughan's peerless mastery of urban blues guitar, you must own Live at Montreux 1982 & 1985. Spaced almost exactly three years apart, these concerts (60 and 93 minutes, respectively) represent the Texan blues god at his fiery best, with Double Trouble (drummer Chris Layton and bassist Tommy Shannon) laying the solid foundation upon which SRV built a Fender-driven sound as fierce as it was perfectly refined... |

Stevie Ray Vaughan : Caught in the CrossfireReviewsAn interesting artist who lived the maybe not-so-typical rock and roll life of early success, drug addiction, sobriety, early death. In his final years, while sober, he produced some of his best work and played with every well-known blues guitar artist on earth, including his inspiring older brother, Jimmy Vaughan. I wasn't impressed with the writing style, although the authors did a great job of including a plethora of dates, names, and places. I'm thankful the authors did not attempt to write the book from what would have been SRV's perspective, taking guesses at his inner thoughts and feelings. Instead it is written more from the perspective of a roady or someone deep inside the SRV camp. Despite it's lack of overall character, the book is an easy read and an essential for any one who appreciates the music of Stevie Ray Vaughan. I agree with another reviewer that the ending seemed to flow much nicer than the rest of the book. In fact, the increasing amount of detail and the slowing of the clock in the pages leading up to SRV's demise gave the spine tingling sense that the end was nearing. This book was excellent! This was a very in-depth look at one of the greatest guitar players of all time. Very detailed look at the person, the player and the man. A must read. I bought this book wanting to learn more about Stevie Ray Vaughn and I think it delivered well.It made me more a fan of his and feel deeply saddened by his un timely death. Anyone that wants to know about Stevies early life and about the people around him should get this book. It follows him from when he got his first guitar as a child and his relationship with his brother jimmy vaughn through his rise to stardom the excess the drugs and booze through to him getting clean and sober and onto the awful night in the mountains when he was killed . A sad story .I would recommend this book to anyone. This bio dang well tells the whole sordid SRV tale, leaving no coke, booze or depravity unturned. It's been 18 years since Stevie Ray departed prematurely. His music holds up well. The book is really good on the lesser known early Austin years. You can almost smell the stale beer in the Texas joints where Stevie came up. If you like SRV and need to know the back story, this is where to get it. I saw him at the Newport Jazz Fest in RI back in probably 83 or so when he was all coked up. He was loud, very loud. But the band really rocked, though why they were booked at the jazz fest is hard to say. Check out the music. That's what's important about SRV. I love the book. I can't put it down. I do not read that many books, but if I am really interested in something, I will read about it. The fact that I can't put it down when I start reading says alot. Average Rating:![]() |

Stevie Ray Vaughan - In the Beginning* (Expansions)ReviewsAs a huge fan of SRV and the reason I took up guitar I was searching for the tabs to one of my favorite songs from him. Despite internet searches there was no "Guitar Hurricane" tabs that I could find. This book has them so I am happy. The track list is: In The Open, Slide Thing, They Call Me Guitar Hurricane, All Your Love(I Miss Loving), Tin Pan Alley, Love Struck Baby, Tell Me, Shake For Me, and Live Another Day. (The back inside cover is a notation legend) These songs are from SRV's "In The Beginning" album. A good job in tabbing all of the songs. Worth the money. Average Rating:![]() |
