I AM NOT A ROCK AND ROLL FAN, BUT I APPRECIATE GOOD MUSIC. ABBA IS DEFINITELY WORTHY OF THE TITLE MUSICIANS. THEIR HARMONICS ARE EXCEPTIONAL. THEIR SONGS ARE TIMELESS. I ENJOY THE WHOLE ALBUM

I absolutely love ABBA, and only regret that I didn't know about them when they were in their hey day. I saw the movie "Mama Mia," and totally loved it, as well. Their music is so great that it makes me wish they were still together and producing music. What extremely talented people they are.

Enjoyed Mama Mia so much that I had to get more of Abba's music. The CD arrived promptly and the sound is excellent. You'll get up and dance to their songs!!

I heard their music when I was younger and after recently watching the movie Mamma Mia, I found myself singing along! This CD had a good mix of the most popular songs performed by Abba.

This cd is a classic. It has all the abba favorites and was delivered on time and in perfect condition.

Anyone looking for the key to Abba's enduring appeal should look no further than "Voulez Vous" and "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)" for their answer. There was an innocence to the Swedish quartet, even when they were singing about one-night stands and the invitations to them...

This CD has 30+ of ABBA's greatest hits. Two of the songs are repeated in french.

This is definitly the best collection of songs on Cd...it has everything and is deffinitly worth getting,,the remastering is not as good on this collection as it is on Abba Gold...

A revelation! Cotton candy for the ear, true, but expertly spun. I dismissed them thirty years ago as bubble gum disco camp, but after a recent listen I knew I was hearing something very special. There is a reason for the enduring appeal of this group. Call it the inevitabilty of chord progressions, or the perfect crafting of voices and technology, Abba is FAR better than I thought they would be.

this is a great deal, and great music! all my favorites plus a number of their songs I had forgotten about. I am extremely pleased with this CD set.

This is ABBA, complete and on 2 cd's. If your an ABBA fan, it's all here and then some. Over 40 songs. Awesome!

Is there anything that simply screams the 1970s' most indelible pop cultural clichés--the sunny romanticism, perfect vocal hooks, feathered hair, stacked heels, and flared sateen britches--more than the Swedish pop phenomenon Abba? And while many a pundit snootily dismissed them during their prime as some sort of prefabricated aberration, their worldwide popularity peaked somewhere just south of Beatlesmania...

Mamma Mia! The Musical Based on the Songs of ABBA: A Decca Broadway Original Cast Recording (1999 London Cast) Mamma Mia! The Musical Based on the Songs of ABBA: A Decca Broadway Original Cast Recording (1999 London Cast)

Reviews

The Musical Mama Mia has one very big advantage. All the singers are professional singers. If you're an Abba fan then this is much better than the movie version. The singing is much better and there are more songs. If you're a fan of Meryl Streep and/or Pierce Brosnan then get the movie sound track. Both are good sound tracks but the Theater version is definitely better music.

I saw the Broadway performance in Durham, NC last month and had to have the CD. This is a great rendition from the original performance in London. This was a used CD and is just fine.I would recommend this recording over the movie recording. The singing talent is much better. Who wants to hear Pierce Brosnan butcher the couple of songs he sang?

This was as great as the music from the show itself. I really enjoyed it.

This vendor listed the condition of this used CD as very good. It came in a broken case and 4 tracks are so damaged that they ere unplayable and had to be skipped. I'll not order from them again

First off, I have to say I'm not really an ABBA fan. I grew up in the 80's listening to Madonna and her contemporaries. But hearing this recording, my God, even I can appreciate their music! I mean, wow! Listening to Siobhan McCarthy is a treat! She has a voice of an angel. Her rendition of The Winner Takes It All was absolutely brilliant! Nothing beats the original production of this musical. So, thank you for the music! :o)

Put together by Abba's own Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! manages to cram over 20 of the Swedish supergroup's songs into a threadbare plot. It goes a little like this: Young Sophie is getting married and she's trying to identify which of three men is her father...

Meetings with Remarkable Men: Gurdjieff's Search for Hidden Knowledge [VHS] Meetings with Remarkable Men: Gurdjieff's Search for Hidden Knowledge [VHS]

Reviews

When I was going through a classic, or, perhaps, mundane, midlife crisis, searching everywhere for answers, someone recommended "Meetings With Remarkable Men" to me. It was an entertaining read. That's it. Not a spiritual journey. Then I learned that a film had been made. When I saw the film, I was blown away. It was, cinematigraphically speaking, the finest film I had ever seen. Just Beautiful. Anyone who thought about it knew the work was apocryphal, even silly. Just entertainment. I think the author had a following. People who thought he spoke a truth with which they connected. He struck me as being a kind of a harmless scoundrel. So I ordered a video of the film from Amazon.com. When I played it on my VCR player, you couldn't make it out at all. Like the early days of TV when sometimes all you could see was ghost images. I should have returned it, but never got around to it. Maybe someday I'll order another copy and find out whether all copies are bad or I just got a lemon.

If you know next to nothing about Gurdjieff, there is a fat chance you will be confused watching this movie, which is based on the so-called second series of All & Everything (written by G. himself), and it bears the same title. My suggestion is: read the book first, and also that outstanding introduction to G.'s ideas, Fragments of an Unknown Teaching. Finally, go back to this movie and enjoy it. If, on the other hand, you know already about G., here is a word for you: the texture of the movie leaves a lot to be desired. However, the scene with the ashoks at the beginning, and the final scene in the temple with some of the Movements (they are executed under the supervision of Madame de Saltzman, i.e. they are the REAL DEAL) fully justify your precious time's investment.

Don't buy this silly nonsense. Gurdjieff must have been related to Rasputin! Hahahah what a comedy!

I first saw this film when pretty young - its effect was devastating. It was on a double bill with Zeffirelli's epic film about St. Francis, "Brother Son, Sister Moon." (I saw both films for a dollar!) Not knowing anything of the movie beforehand, I went for years wondering what was the name of this remarkable movie, before finally stumbling upon it at a video store whilst visiting friends in another city. Repeated viewings show it to be, while a bit of its period, still holding up. There is such a sense of the spiritual here entirely capturing the excitement of the beginning of Gurdjieff's journey. There is much throughout the film to give one time to pause and reflect, but then the film ends with what is now well-known as the 10 minute dance/movement sequence and Brook knew what he was doing ending the film with this. I remember my heart nearly exploding in the theatre a sense of spiritual energy and awe from others in the theatre who were reacting the same as I. I remain a bit perplexed as to how and why this amazing, enlightening and enriching film has not yet been transferred to DVD. Hopefully, when that happens it will receive the "Criterion treatment" - with interviews and commentary by Peter Brook, a good widescreen transfer and cleaned up sound from its VHS incarnation.

This is perhaps one of only a half dozen movies ever made that captures the spiritual experience. You actually FEEL the spiritual feelings that they are experiencing on the screen. This is almost unheard of. The only other movie that did this for me recently was Koslowski's 'Blue' of a few years back. The movie is a true journey of the seeking of individuals -- as well as the journey of the soul. It is tremendous feat. I especially love the very exotic location. It starts in the mountains at the intersection of Armenia, Afghanistan, Russia, where a mystical contest takes place. Then it continues on across the Gobi desert, to Egypt, as Gurdjieff and friend visits what seems like every bearded guru in West Asia. The film has a few awkward moments; but overall the film is a treasure. I hope they develop a version that's not grainy (which is the ones that seems to be going around in the theaters the last twenty years). I also hope they can make a DVD version out of this revelation of the spirit.

Heritage - Civilization and the Jews [VHS] Heritage - Civilization and the Jews [VHS]

There can be no debate: this is one of TV's best cultural contributions ever. Despite a few production values which are a bit dated even in this restored dvd, it's entertaining and visually rich. The content is true to the title, and this IS the history of the Jewish people, but Heritage is also very much about all of western civilization. Abba Eban is the perfect narrator, and also part of the Jewish history on which he expounds. It's not apparent from his scripted role, but the late Dr. Eban was an extraordinarily articulate scholar turned politician. I remember him as Israel's ambassador to the UN, and his ability to speak extemporaneously, clearly, and persuasively stood out in the 60s, and would still today.

It is so great that I want to install the Interactive Multimedia DVD in my new PC but seems it doesn't work with Windows Vista. Did anybody solved this problem?

The set of 5 tapes arrived in an insulated box but the tape box itself had a dent in it. That first tape on that side of the box had split in two on the plastic. I did write the company about it and they answered very quickly and said to send the tape back and they would replace it. My husband decided he would try to clue the broken piece. Fortunately it worked so we decided to forgo the mailing back of the tape. The outer box that this set was mailed in was not dented and we think that the box with the tapes was damaged before it was put in the mailing box. Accidents do happen and it would not prevent me from ordering again from this company. Rosamond S.

the very first disk was defective and i called the company and they told me "tough"

Abba Eban was not only the most accomplished and articulate of all Israeli diplomats, he was also a person of immense learning and intelligence. Had he wished he could have taken a different road in life and become like his close friend, Bernard Lewis, a great scholar. Instead he made a certain sacrifice and devoted his life to the cause of helping the Jewish state come into being and survive. This nine- part series is not concentrated on Israel but rather is a survey of Jewish civilization. Eban tries to show us how Jews interacted with the surrounding world, both learning and giving to the larger native socieities. From Babylon and Egypt to the Western Civlization of the present day Eban relates a story of a small people's long journey and meetings with others. This is an illuminating survey and will give anyone who wishes to know more about Jewish life and history a real opportunity to do so.

Winner of the coveted Peabody Award, Heritage - Civilization and the Jews is the monumental nine-part series spanning five millennia of Jewish history and culture. The series is hosted by former Israeli Ambassador to the United States, Abba Eban, who describes it as "a celebration of our common humanistic and moral heritage, explored through the mysteries of preservation, renewal, and resonance of the Jewish people...

East of Eden [VHS] East of Eden [VHS]

Reviews

I highly recommend this product. It is a great movie, great cast and stands the test of time. This is one of my favorite movies.

This film is an excellent learning tool for any modern-US History class learning about America's involvement in World War I. The scences right after Cal gets the money from his mother to start growing soy beans for the war effort up to the small anti-German riot are so spot on. Students are transported to the small CA town of Salinas as it prepares to send its young men off to war. The parade, the propaganda, the draft board, the news headlines, anti-German sentiment, and war profitering are all covered. One of the best lines is during the parade when Cal says to Aaron: "Your own Wodrow Wilson's gonna' make the world safe for democracy." GREAT!

The Bottom Line: This adaptation of the second half of Steinbeck's epic novel isn't a great piece of storytelling but it succeeds in being interesting because setting the method acting James Dean against old-school Raymond Massey (who genuinely disliked the young Dean) electrifies their scenes together, generating enough tension to keep the viewer engaged despite the less impressive secondary players and plot. 3/4

I've lately been reading great novels of the twentieth century and I'd just finished John Steinbeck's East of Eden. Certainly Steinbeck's best, the novel expands on the Biblical story of Cain and Abel through three generations of a family, more true to the Biblical text than most preachers ever could be, and philosophically ahead of its time. But this movie version is disappointing. The script was clearly written to showcase the promising young actor James Dean stereotyped in the "what's happening to our teenagers" 50's angst. The script obliterated Steinbeck's story line, cut out the Greek Chorus-like main character of the novel- the Chinese manservant Lee- and tried to focus a multi-generational theme into a few months of a wayward teen's life. The film is only a 'classic' because Dean was superb and he died so young. I highly recommend the 1981 mini-series TV film version of the story over the 50's 'classic.'

Well worth purchasing this classic. The information dtata on the film very interesting. Buy it and enjoy.

East of Eden is an acknowledged classic, and the starring debut of James Dean lifts it to legendary status. John Steinbeck's novel gave director Elia Kazan a perfect Cain-and-Abel showcase for Dean's iconic screen persona, casting the brooding star as Cal, the younger of two brothers vying for the love of their Bible-thumping father (Raymond Massey) in Monterey, California, at the dawn of World War I...

ABBA was a Swedish pop music group formed in 1972. The band consisted of Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. They topped the charts worldwide from the mid-1970s to the early 1980s. The name "ABBA" is an acronym formed from the first letters of each of the group members' given names (Agnetha, Björn, Benny, Anni-Frid).

ABBA gained immense international popularity employing catchy song hooks, simple lyrics, and a Wall of Sound achieved by overdubbing the female singers' voices in multiple harmonies. As their popularity grew, they were sought after to tour Europe, Australia, and North America, drawing crowds of near-hysterical fans, notably in Australia. Touring became a contentious issue, being particularly unpopular with Agnetha, but they continued to release studio albums to great commercial success. At the height of their popularity, however, both marriages of the band members (Agenetha with Björn, and Benny with Anni-Frid) failed, and the relationship changes were reflected in their music, as they produced more thoughtful lyrics with different compositions.

They remain a fixture of radio playlists and are one of the world's best selling bands, having sold over 370 million records world wide; they still sell two to four million records a year. ABBA was also the first pop group from mainland Europe to enjoy consistent success in the charts of English-speaking countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Ireland, South Africa, Rhodesia, Australia and New Zealand. Their enormous popularity subsequently opened the doors for other Continental European acts.

The music of ABBA has been re-arranged into the successful musical Mamma Mia! that has toured worldwide and had a movie version released in July 2008. All four of the former members of ABBA were present at the Stockholm premieres of both the musical (2005) and the film (2008). The film première took place at the Benny Andersson-owned Rival Theatre at Mariatorget, Stockholm on 4 July 2008. A new museum devoted entirely to the pop supergroup was scheduled to open in Stockholm in 2009, but the project was postponed as of September 2008.
