Aretha's Best Aretha's Best

Reviews

What a soul powerhouse! This lady has the power to just take you up and send you on your musical way. Every song is beautiful. This is truly a wonderful collection giving the best of Aretha. Rightly named. My favorite will always be "Say a little Prayer" which is what prompted me to buy the CD. The rest of the CD is my bonus.

Aretha gets my vote for Queen of Soul, Rythm, and Blues and this CD is certainly the best of her best. You cannot go wrong by selecting this music!

I've love Aretha franklin since I was very young child... My mother would play her music as she clean the house... Although I was to young to understand her talent at the time I have grown and learn to love and respect her as a greart taleted soul singer... As a singer now I reflex and study her soulfulness to learn from... This is a great CD because it has all of her greatest hits and anyone who loves and resepects soul music would enjoy this CD... The Queen Of Soul Title Is Well Deserve....;)

Finally ... now that I'm in my mid 50s, I have Aretha in my music library! Talk about instant gratification! I downloaded the whole album in less than 5 minutes and am enjoying it right now. Isn't technology great!

Aretha Franklin has had more hits than tis, but how many are you going to find that have jump to it and who's zoomin who on the same album. If anyone knows speak up. These were 2 of my favorites and getting both on the same album is nearly impossible. By the way the sound quality is also good.

Amazing Grace: The Complete Recordings Amazing Grace: The Complete Recordings

Reviews

This is the first time that I ever neglected to read the reviews before making a purchase and certainly my first time ever to be moved to comment, but I have to. This copy of Amazing Grace stinks. I had the original LP and somehow my 2nd or 3rd CD copy of the original LP grew legs and walked {just like the others). The commentary between songs is distractng, there is too much repetition of some songs and, worst of all, the Power of the album is totally lacking. Oh it's Aretha alright, but something is missing... take it from someone who grew up seeing and hearing her on a regular basis in her father's church before she became the Queen. I just ordered a copy of the original 1972 version without all of the additives. I know I won't be disppointed.

Originally recorded as an LP in 1972, "Amazing Grace" remains one of my favorite recordings. In this expanded CD version, David Nathan in his liner notes says that "Amazing Grace" was Aretha's best-selling album, information that should not come as a surprise to anyone who has ever heard it. She recorded it live at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles with the Southern California Community Choir directed by the Reverend James Cleveland on two consecutive nights, January 13 and 14, 1972. The CD has everything going for it: the enthusiasm of the audience, the spontaneity possible only in a live performance, the beautiful gospel piano accompaniment by Cleveland (except for two songs), the commentary by both Cleveland and Aretha's father, the Reverend C. L. Franklin ("Aretha never left the church"), the angelic voices of the choir and finally that voice. No one ever said that Ms. Franklin sounds like anyone else on earth, and she never sang better than in this recording session. She has a tremendous range and can do anything she wants to do with a melody, even to singing an acceptable version of Puccini's "Nessum Dorma." Besides the title song, Aretha sings a glorious arrangement of Marvin Gaye's "Wholy Holy," the Rodgers and Hammerstein's "You'll Never Walk Alone," and "How I Got Over." She turns Carol King's "You've Got A Friend" into gospel and then seques into Tommy Dorsey's familiar "Precious Lord, Take My Hand." Ms. Franklin sings "Precious Memories with Cleveland and does a fantastic version of "What A Friend We Have In Jesus." If I had to pick a favorite, a difficult decision, I would have to go with "Never Grow Old" with Aretha accompanying herself on the piano. This music arises above gospel music and appeals to music lovers of all colors and religions. The CD should be put in a time capsule.

Aretha Franklin's Amazing Grace: The Complete Recordings (1996) goes back to her legendary 1972 gospel album and expands it to include the stimulating music and previously unreleased spiritual oration from both nights of her famous performance at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles, CA. The album has also been digitally remastered and neatly repackaged as a 2-disc set. Where the original album was sweetened with orchestral overdubs and didn't include the Rev. James Cleveland's spoken words, here the focus is on documenting the event itself and presenting the music as it was actually heard live (Aretha's Baptist minister dad, the Rev. C. L. Franklin, also speaks). It's a welcome change, too; the communal spirit of hope, love and appreciation that beams from this congregation in response to these inspiring performances adds so much here. It quickly becomes very clear that Aretha's performance was much more than entertainment for this audience. The spiritual enthusiasm that is at times powerfully contagious is at other times overwhelmingly humbling. The sweet serenity of Marvin Gaye's Wholy Holy contrasts the jumping gospel energy of How I Got Over and the funky soul beat of Mary Don't You Weep. This stuff ROCKS! Highlights include a compelling extended version of Precious Memories (with the Rev. James Cleveland) and an epic fourteen-minute rendition of Amazing Grace. Aretha is at the top of her game here, doing what she was obviously born to do. She lights up these gospel classics with heartfelt clarity and bursts of melodious soul-screaming that could make Amy Winehouse and Christine Aguilera blush. She really shows 'em how it's done here. The Southern California Community Choir is an essential element in this recording, and their wonderful performance provides a moving and deeply textured backdrop that holds things together magnificently. Amazing Grace: The Complete Recordings is a modern, more historically accurate and inspiring take on one of the greatest and best-selling gospel recordings in history. It's almost impossible not to be moved while listening to this album, and Aretha Franklin's talent, spirit and charisma are in full bloom in this pure and most genuine of musical settings. Amazing, indeed! "The only man that walks alone is a man that has no God..."

This is an excellent recording with all of the original power, grace and authenticity of the Queen of Soul singing the gospel of Jesus Christ as was captured on this live recording. The interesting thing is to try to do a comparison between this relatively untouched live CD versus the LP album that I listened to in the 70's and to try and note the differences. The comments from Reverend James Cleveland and even the "technical difficulties" that are recorded give this original recording a flavor that the polished final LP album from the 70's did not have. I especially loved the song that the choir sang that backed Aretha as their introduction on both nights of this two night live recording. The liner notes alone are priceless as well as the photos. This is one great gospel CD well worth the purchase to enjoy Aretha singing praises to God for years to come.

A good listen if you can't find something better... Check out this other album by Aretha Franklin; Amazing Grace

This Rhino re-release of Amazing Grace is at least as much a work of love as of marketing. The sound is beefier and clearer, but most importantly, the two-day church sessions are included. So, there's much more church (specifically, Reverend James Cleveland's marvelous orating) on the record, as well as contemporaryisms such as a cool organ rendition of George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord...

Shindig! Presents: Groovy Gals [VHS] Shindig! Presents: Groovy Gals [VHS]

Songs Include : Ketty Lester - "Love Letters" Aretha Franklin - "Shoop Shoop Song" Leslie Gore - "Judy's Turn To Cry" Toys - "Lover's Concerto" Fontella Bass - "Rescue Me" The Supremes - "Baby Love" Shangri-Las - "Give Him A Great Big Kiss" Petula Clark - "Downtown" The Blossoms - "I Like It Like That" Tina Turner - "Ooh Poo Pah Do" Jackie DeShannon - "What The World Needs Now"

All I got to say is watch Aretha sing The Shoop Shoop song to death! Better still, watch Darlene Love react to her.....WOW! All good, Tina in rare form also. Waiting for this to hit DVD format.

If one were doing a SHINDIG compilation featuring themost popular Gal singers of the mid 60's I don't understand how they could omit PATTY DUKE. She did two appearances on the short-lived albeit very popular SHINDIG TV program and introduced two Hit records, "Don't Just Stand There" and "Say Something Funny". She was, without a doubt, the most Popular young female Teen Star of that time. Perhaps she couldn't warble to the same vocal level of Pet Clark or Aretha Franklin, but herabsence here is clearly an oversight. If this show is ever repackaged in DVD format, one would hope that Patty Duke's two appearances on this showwould not be over-looked.

Given that there are now DVDs of The Ed Sullivan Show,Hullabaloo and Music Scene, how about putting Shindig out on DVD?International audiences that cannot buy NTSC videos will snap up DVDs of these shows,as will the US audience due to the better picture and sound. These videos have some great 60's acts on them and deserve DVD release.

"Shindig" might have been less famous and short-lived unlike much famous "Ed Sullivan Show", but could offer much variety of artists. And of course, singing girls are not forgotten. As another reviewer gave us a complete list of artists you can see on this video, I will not repeat it, but I think I am allowed to add several other things. First, the video' title is a little misleading; there are 11 acts by talented girl singers and groups, but some of them should be found in another volume of this series. (Why must The Supremes be here when Rhino Company got another volume called "Motown" ?) Or, I think Ketty Lester singing "Love Letters" is closer to jazz vocal even though her footage might be rare. Well, but I don't complain, because her song is certainly great. So, let me tell you several of my favorite acts; Tina is always fantastic (she appears in another volume of the series, check it out), but more delightful is Aretha Franklin singing "Shoop Shoop Song," which Cher also sang in the soundtrack of "The Mermaids," which is, incidentally, Christina Ricci"s debut film. The Blossoms, regular band of Shindig, again sings "I Like it Like That," classic Chris Kenner song with Darlene Love (later regular of "Lethal Weapon" series), and Leslie Gore "Judy's Turn to Cry," sings her follow-up song to her superhit "It's My Party." But why Judy? Oh, listen to "It's My Party" first, please. I happen to have seen her act live in Japan around 1990 when she came with Del Shannon and Johnny Tillotson, and I remebered that time... sorry, I digressed. A little disappointment is Patula Clark's "Downtown," which you heard on the soundtrack of "Girl, Interrupted" because this is clearly lip-sync. A pity. But the greatest treasure to me is Shangri-Las's "Give Him a Great Big Kiss." Do you believe they do this song LIVE here? And with the dialogue section in the middle of the song? And the lead singer actually doing the gesture of looking up when she says "I gotta look up!!!" But they do all, and this part only compensates for anything. It is interesting to note that, though you might be looking the picture of the group when they were threesome, the live act shows full four members. This means the program was shot in 1965 before member Marge Ganser left the group. Another interesting thing is the fact that the group consists two sets of sisters from New York -- Mary Ann & Margie Ganser, and Mary & Betty Weiss -- and the former set was a twin. Look closer, you may notice it.

A wonderful retrospective of Aretha Franklins' music career. I saw it on PBS and had to have it,so I searched the web for many months with no luck. I am thrilled to have on VHS until it is finally released on DVD. It leaves no stone unturned in telling her story. I grew up listening to her music and knew most of the details of her life, but this is a concise gathering of the facts that is unlike any other biography I have seen. If you like her music,it is a must-have.
