Great movie about the time of the late 60`s If only young people would try and understand the story that deals with NO VIOLENCE. Great music

This two-disc set will make you feel like you're there (or for some, there AGAIN!) It contains fabulous music and well-videod performances by some of the BEST of the 60's bands!! If you loved the era, or want to get a taste of it for the first time, this is the video for you!

Needless to say, I'm of the 60's era. It's been fun to watch all the 40th anniversay specials aired in '09, and this dvd really captured the sentiment of the time.

To include Director's cut to me means more footage than the original Woodstock movie...there was more but not much more...still it gives me a point in history that no one will ever forget...just wish there was more history to see.

The actual event of Woodstock goes beyond simple concert and music footage. The work of capturing history on film must have been daunting. Not only was history captured on film, it was filmed as documentary, too. When it's mentioned that this film won an Oscar as best documentary, "of course" is the only comment that comes to mind. The extended version or director's cut is worth the time. When I got this film, I called my neighbors and had a Woodstock evening with food, drink, and, well whatever. It was wonderful to be that young, again, and listen to some of our musical heroes. This should be required viewing for every generation in the foreseeable future. Enjoy.

Average Rating:

The three-day Woodstock music festival in 1969 was the pivotal event of the 1960s peace movement, and this landmark concert film is the definitive record of that milestone of rock & roll history. It's more than a chronicle of the hippie movement, however; this is a film of genuine historical and social importance, capturing the spirit of America in transition, when the Vietnam War was at its peak and antiwar protest was fully expressed through the liberating music of the time...

The Burning Season - The Chico Mendes Story [VHS] The Burning Season - The Chico Mendes Story [VHS]

Reviews

My only reason for seeing this film was because Luis Guzman is in it. Raul Julia plays "Chico Mendes", a true story of a man who tried to save his people in the Amazon Rainforest. A story that needed to be told, but this film is overlong and slow-moving. I do believe the rainforests should be saved and destroying them should be stopped. Instead of decreasing them, the forests should be expanded. The rainforests are beneficial to our weather and to th humans and wildlife there. Flowers in the rainforests have been used for medical research and medicine that can not be found anywhere else. What would happen if land was just roads, concrete, buildings and desert. I think if a patch of unhistoric desert is bare, just plant trees there. It would look nicer than a vacant lot. It is trees that tranform our air into what we can breathe. I think trees and water play an importence in bringing forth rain as well. If you have ever lived in a drought area, you would know what I mean. During filming of this tv-movie, Raul Julia got food poisoning from sushi. He was air lifted to a hospital. He had lost weight and was weakened by his condition. That same year, he filmed Street Fighter (Widescreen Extreme Edition)(1994) and then his last film, Down Came a Blackbird [VHS] (1995-tv). In October 1994, after attending an opera, he had stomach pains. Later that night, he suffered a stroke. He went into a coma and fours days later died from a brain hemorrhage. If you like Raul Julia, see him in The Morning After (1986).

The film The Burning Season is a wonderful movie. It represents the trials and tribulations of the rubber tappers. The movie focuses on the courageous acts of Chico Mendes. He stood up for what he believed in and prevented a highway from being built in the amazon. However, the cattle ranchers had a big influence in wanting the rain forests to be destroyed. They would do anything to stop the protests even if it meant killing Chico Mendes. I felt that the director did a good job presenting the history of Brazil and the struggle of the rain forests. On the other hand I feel that the fact that this movie was made in " holly wood" so to speak, it hurt the film. I think that Chico Mendes was portrayed as being perfect in the film. People, whether they are from Brazil or the United States that want to help save the rain forests will feel they can't can't because they cannot meet the standards of Chico Mendes. So therefore I hope people see past this message that only perfect people can do great things. The truth is everyone can help and take part in saving the rainforests!

The Burning Season is a wonderful film about the life and struggles of Chico Mendez. Chico (played by Raul Julia) fought his entire life to save the Amazon from ranchers and miners that wanted to cut it down. He lived a very peaceful life in Brazil as a seringueiro or rubber tapper until the cattle ranchers and miners took over his land and destroyed it. Mendez was a pioneer for the start of many efforts to save the rain forests. Unfortunately, his efforts were cut short when the son of a cattle rancher shot and killed him at his home. The movie does a great job of making viewers aware of what is happening in Brazil and how much destruction of the Amazon rain forests actually takes place.

Originally airing on HBO, "The Burning Season" stars the late Raul Julia as Chico Mendes, the founder of Brazil's ecological movement to preserve and save the Amazon rainforest from the destruction by herders, miners, and other companies wanting to exploit the region's rich natural supplies. Mendes, who led a movement from the small frontier town of Acre, became an international celebrity after he went on Brazilian television to fight the destruction of the Amazonian Rainforest. With the ban on Argentine beef, Brazilian farmers saw the Amazon as being an emerging area to raise cattle in order to meet the world demand for beef. Miners, who were moving onto Indian lands to mine for gold, copper, and other minerals were also effecting the rainforest's ecology.Mendes, who was a "seringuiero," or "rubber-tapper," relied on the Amazon's vast supply of rubber trees in order to make a living. Seeing that his source of income was in peril with the elimination of trees in order to make room for miners and farmers, Mendes began a national movement to awaken the consciousness of the world about the obvious dangers that lurked nearby if the rainforest was cleared. However, his life will take a tragic turn when he was only starting to gain international awareness and support for his movement.Puerto-Rican born actor Raul Julia, gives on of the final performances of his gifted life as Chico Mendes. Brazilian actress Sonia Braga also lends her talents to this important film that was filmed in Mexico's Yucatan region. Both actors, as well as the film's realism add depth and realism to a film that should be watched by all, especially when recent news indicate that the world's sea levels are rising due to global warming. This is a must-see film for everyone. Chico Mendes' mission to educate the world of the immense importance that Brazil's rainforest is to world's climate control should not die in vain. This important, ethical film will awaken your awareness of what the Amazon's destruction and development will have on the world's population

Raul Julia sympathetically portrays a modern icon of the environmental movement in a wonderful propoganda film. The film delves headfirst into issues of social and environmental justice and ethics. The viewer cannot come away without stirred emotions and be haunted by the images.

Purchased this as a gift item for my adult son....so, according to him, it is wonderful! He has many Eric Clapton CDs....but this one is and will always be a favorite!

WHAT A FANTASTIC COLLECTION OF TALENT THE OLD AND THE NEW!!! TWO STAND OUT FOR ME WERE JONNY LANG AND STEVE VAI !!! I HAD NEVER SEEN THEM PERFORM BEFORE AND I WAS BLOWN AWAY!!! JUST TERRIFIC. WHAT A SHOW !!

this is a great double disc video, I can't get enough of it, Eric Clapton has done a great job with this one, gathering all these musicians, all great performances a must have.

Instead of the Eric Clapton Crossroads DVD, I received Casino Royale. I contacted the seller via the prescribed e-mail channel and was never able to get a response. I did not want to waste more time on it, but getting a movie I already owned was of no value. I will not shop here again.

I got this for christmas a long time ago and loved it. Anybody who can play is there! Buy it for the guitar lover in your family

This is a very nice edition of the woodstock film. I'm not at all sure that the Blu-ray version is any better than the normal DVD. I have both and just don't see that it is worth the extra cost.

This was given to a friend that was at the original Woodstock, not only did he say the was the best gift he ever received he said it sounded like he was back at the farm. The quality and content was very well done and well worth the money.

The Woodstock 40th Anniversary 3 disc dvd set was a Christmas gift for my sister. I had shopped every where looking for it but the prices were sky high. It was less than 2 weeks before Christmas when I went on Amazon and found it for a great price. I was afraid I wouldn't receive it in time but it came in the mail less than a week after I placed my order!!! The item was in perfect condition!! The shopping experience was 100% satisfactory and my sister loves it!!

There is nothing that I can add to the various positive reviews that have been done. This is an excellent selection. The music selections were great, and the documentary footage was informative. I wish there were more. I don't know why this item has been discontinued. I would have purchased it on Amazon had it been available, but I saw it at Blockbuster video for $45 and purchased it there.

Thank you Amazon for the easy processing and fast shipment of my Ultimate Collector's Edition WOODSTOCK order. My wife and I have really enjoyed our purchase and would recommend it to anyone looking to purchase it. PLEASE be aware though, if the DVD you are purchasing says Blu-ray Disc it will not play on a standard DVD Disk Player or Computer. When I purchased this item I did not know this and was in the process of returning it to Amazon. I decided not to return it and purchased a Blu-ray Disk Player, I made a good choice.

This director’s cut of Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music, released to coincide with the 40th anniversary of that legendary concert event, has to be one of the most impressive Blu-ray releases of 2009 or any other year--and that’s even before you put the discs in your player...

Carlos Augusto Santana Alves (born 20 July, 1947 in Jalisco, Mexico) is a Grammy Award-winning rock musician and guitarist. He became famous in the late 1960s and early 1970s with his band, Santana, which created a highly successful blend of rock, salsa, and jazz fusion. The band's sound featured his melodic, blues-based guitar lines set against Latin percussion such as timbales and congas. Santana continued to work in these forms over the following decades. He experienced a sudden resurgence of popularity and critical acclaim in the late 1990s. Rolling Stone also named Santana number 15 on their list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time in 2003.

Early life

Born 20 July, 1947, in Autlán de Navarro, Jalisco. His father, José, was an accomplished professional violinist, and Carlos learned to play the guitar at age 8. In1955, the family moved from Autlán de Navarro to Tijuana, the border city between Mexico and California. As a teenager, Santana began performing in Tijuana and near-by Mexicali, inspired by the American rock & roll and blues music of artists like B. B. King, Ray Charles, and Little Richard. Santana moved again with his family, this time to San Francisco's Mission District, where his father hoped to find work by becoming a famous violinist and his mother Maria belen , an artist

In San Francisco, the young guitarist got the chance to see his idols, most notably King, perform live. He was also introduced to a variety of new musical influences, including jazz and international folk music, and witnessed the growing hippie movement centered in San Francisco in the 1960s. After several years spent working as a dishwasher in a diner and playing for spare change on the streets, Santana decided to become a full-time musician; in 1966, he formed the Santana Blues Band, with fellow street musicians David Brown and Gregg Rolie (bassist and keyboard player, respectively).

With their highly original blend of Latin-infused rock, jazz, blues, salsa, and African rhythms, the band (which quickly became known simply as Santana) gained an immediate following on the San Francisco club scene. The band's early success, capped off by a memorable performance at Woodstock in 1969, led to a recording contract with Columbia Records, then run by Clive Davis.
