Valleys Of Neptune Valleys Of Neptune

Reviews

I only saw Jimi live once, but it was an experience that remains forever with me. Now as an aging fan the release of "Valley of Neptune", takes me instantly back to my youth. What an EXPERIENCE! Buy it you will not be disappointed.

Yes these are unfinished and retouched recordings but I agree with others that the sound quality is excellent. Especially considering the source material. Frankly I like the 2 bonus instrumental tracks the best of all. It's great to hear Jimi stretch out and jam. His guitar soars straight to my soul. I also like the instrumentals Sunshine Of Your Love and Lullaby for Summer despite the reused Easy Rider riff. The other tracks have there ups and downs and its great to hear other versions of some of his classics. Any true Jimi fan would want this.

This Hedrix Neptune cd stinks! The family wanted money. No wonder these songs never became anything back then. I just wasted over $10 counting shipping.

Tie dyed Hendrix fans have been given a rare treat with this album. This isn't the typical hack-n-slash release of Jimi's so-called "lost recordings" that have tainted his legacy for the last forty years. This is genuine material that was intended for his listeners ears--but sadly collected dust until now. Kudos to the engineers who mixed and mastered these tracks--they sound hauntingly modern--probably not a difficult feat considering todays technology--I think Jimi would have been suitably impressed. It may take some time for fans to get used to the new versions of "Stone Free" and "Fire", but if the liner notes can be believed, this is the way Hendrix intended them to sound originaly. It's left to the imagination how he would've approached the rest of his backlog had he still been around. But in the end, the best thing about this new material is that it's going to take guitarists another four decades of arguing and debate as to how to properly play this stuff!! Bottom line: Buy it. If you worship at the alter of Jimi, you're gonna love it.

This is some really nice 1969 jams, the sound quality is right on. I'm really enjoying the music. I hope they keep it coming. Recommended for all fans. Keep jammkng.

Are You Experienced CD/DVD Are You Experienced CD/DVD

Reviews

If you already have the 1997 MCA editions of these (Are You, Axis, Ladyland), then you basically have these remastered versions minus the (short) DVDs. There's really no discernable difference in audio quality between these 2010 remasters and the 1997 remasters. They sound identical. BUT...if you really need the DVDs and/or you don't own the 1997 issues, by all means GO FOR IT! So take the five star review for the quality of the music, keeping in mind you may already have these versions in your collection if you're considering purchasing these reissues.

I hear a difference. The mixes are different. I think the new mix is better. I think we're into diminishing returns. Still... you'll have to hear this if you want the best sound and make your choice. Vocals definitely more upfront, detailed for example. I think your system will ultimately reveal this or not. Don't doubt, there is a difference.

TO ALL THE TECHNICAL GENIUSES, I THINK THEY SOUND GREAT! MONEY WELL SPENT> I RECOMEND THE REMASTERS TO EVERYONE. ENJOY!

This is one of the great debuts of rock! This new remaster of Are You Experienced? is incredible. As if that's not enough, there's a 36 page booklet and a mini dcoumantary DVD too! A great deal for the $ IMO! RIP Jimi, Noel and Mitch, we miss ya.

Well, Being the Hendrix fanatic I am I jumped on the whole lot...big mistake, the DVDs are cool, but short (about 20 min each). Unless you have do not have these CDs already, or you must have the DVDs, skip it. These are the SAME remasters from before. As another person pointed out, the track times are the same and when I ripped them into ITunes, it recognized them as the 1997 editions. I feel like I just wasted $40 I should have waited for reviews!

Electric Ladyland CD/DVD Electric Ladyland CD/DVD

Reviews

The album was a masterpiece when it was released, and remains so. There are some passages of 60's-era experimental, drug-suffused one-upsmanship, lending an occasionally dated quality. For the most part, though, the carefully crafted, inventive character of the album remains timeless. Especially at ~$9, this is a must-have for those who lack this album in their collection. (Stevie Ray Vaughan fans will appreciate the shared sensibilities and vision of these two virtuoso guitarists, each having left us far too soon.) The CD is clearly a remaster of the original recording, and may be a partial remix as well. The equalization, dynamics, and stereo separation is generally more appealing to the contemporary (i.e., digital-era) ear, though the latter seems to be even more exaggerated than the original (to my recollection). Many of the shortcomings and idiosyncrasies of analog multitracking of that time are quite apparent. What would now be regarded as poor production values underscores the creativity required decades ago to produce such rich, multi-layered compositions with limited technical means. Even though the remaster is strikingly different, I like that the integrity of the recordings was largely maintained - e.g., the amplifier hum behind the lead vocals. Breathing of the noise floor due to compression is occasionally distracting, but it is largely a successful balance between preservation and enhancement. I already had a remaster dating from the late 1990's - haven't had a chance to do a A/B comparison, but I'm not convinced that this release (if it is different at all) warrants getting another copy, if you already have the earlier remaster. I bought it because of the accompanying DVD mini documentary. Clocking in at around 12 minutes, the emphasis should be squarely on the "mini" part. The interview with Eddie Kramer is somewhat interesting, but the DVD was mostly disappointing, both for its brevity and lack of development. Those looking for footage of Hendrix himself will find only a few seconds of concert snips. Even lacking that, there is little narrative flow or depth to the story. A half-a**ed effort. I highly recommend this to those who don't have the album, and recommend it to those who only have the original CD (or LP). If you're looking for significant value added over the earlier remaster, especially from the DVD, I wouldn't bother, unless you are obsessed with anything Hendrix.

This is a great remaster if Jimi's third album (a double LP set back in the day). This great set includes a 36 page booklet and a mini documantary DVD too! A great deal for the $ IMO! RIP Jimi, Noel and Mitch, we miss ya.

Jimi Hendrix Bio

James Marshall Hendrix (born Johnny Allen Hendrix; November 27, 1942 – September 18, 1970) was an American guitarist, singer and songwriter. He is widely considered to be the greatest guitarist in the history of rock music by other musicians and commentators in the industry, and one of the most important and influential musicians of his era across a range of genres. After initial success in Europe, he achieved fame in the United States following his 1967 performance at the Monterey Pop Festival. Later, Hendrix headlined the iconic 1969 Woodstock Festival and the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival.

Hendrix often favored raw overdriven amplifiers with high gain and treble and helped develop the previously undesirable technique of guitar amplifier feedback. Hendrix, along with bands such as Cream was one of the musicians who popularized the wah-wah pedal in mainstream rock which he often used to deliver an exaggerated pitch in his solos, particularly with high bends and use of legato based around the pentatonic scale. He was influenced by blues artists such as B. B. King, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Albert King, and Elmore James, rhythm and blues and soul guitarists Curtis Mayfield, Steve Cropper, as well as by some modern jazz. In 1966, Hendrix, who played and recorded with Little Richard's band from 1964 to 1965, was quoted as saying, "I want to do with my guitar what Little Richard does with his voice."

Carlos Santana has suggested that Hendrix's music may have been influenced by his Native American heritage. As a record producer, Hendrix also broke new ground in using the recording studio as an extension of his musical ideas. He was one of the first to experiment with stereophonic and phasing effects for rock recording.

Hendrix won many of the most prestigious rock music awards in his lifetime, and has been posthumously awarded many more, including being inducted into the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005. An English Heritage "Blue plaque" was erected in his name on his former residence at Brook Street, London, in September 1997. A star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (at 6627 Hollywood Blvd.) was dedicated in 1994. In 2006, his debut US album, Are You Experienced, was inducted into the United States National Recording Registry, and Rolling Stone named Hendrix the top guitarist on its list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time in 2003.
